What the numbers mean

Readings on the screen

Voltvik shows short symbols to fit on the round screen. Here is what they mean in practice.

Explanation of values shown on Voltvik
ViewMeaningExplanation
%Charge level (SoC)Roughly how full the battery is.
VVoltageThe electrical voltage reported by the battery or device.
ACurrentHow much current is going into or out of the battery. A positive value means charging, a negative value means consumption.
W / VAPowerHow much power is being produced, charged or used right now.
AhConsumed ampere-hoursAmpere-hours used since the battery was last full, depending on the connected device.
kWhEnergy in/out over 24 hoursEnergy produced or used today, for example solar yield.
% tankTank levelLevel from Mopeka, calculated from empty and full readings in setup.
kgGas leftApproximate kilos of propane left when the gas bottle is set to 6, 11 or 14 kg.
FROST!Frost warningFlashes instead of the page title when the battery is charged below freezing. Must be turned on first — see below.
FROST / FROSTFARETank temperatureOn the WATER page, the coldest water tank is shown: red at 0 °C or lower, blue at 4 °C or lower.
On the battery screens, positive A means the battery is charging. Negative A means you are drawing from the battery.

The frost guard

Lithium can tolerate being cold. It cannot tolerate being charged cold. Charging below zero can cause permanent damage without any warning, and the solar panels start delivering as soon as it gets light, long before the battery compartment is warm.

The guard triggers only when the battery is colder than zero degrees and current is going into it at the same time. Cold without charging is harmless, and then it says nothing. If there is a battery monitor in the system, that is the reference: it measures the current that actually reaches the battery after consumption has been subtracted.

If the guard triggers, the charging pages change title to a flashing FROST!, the icons turn red and the screen jumps to the battery page. The warning clears first at one degree, so it does not flicker around zero.

Temperature is worth watching for other reasons too. Water in the fresh-water tank and pipes freezes below zero. Propane gives lower pressure the colder it gets, and butane practically stops evaporating around zero, so the gas heating can fail just when you need it.

The frost guard is off from the factory and requires a temperature sensor placed by the battery. Select it under Screen in setup, in the “Temperature sensor at the battery” field. Voltvik does not guess: a sensor out in the snow while the battery is warm in the garage would give false warnings.

Troubleshooting

Voltvik writes the status in plain text on the setup page, one line per slot. Press the message that looks like what you see. If it says weak signal next to an otherwise working OK, the connection is marginal — it works now, but may fail when a door is closed or the device is moved.

The setup page does not open

When Voltvik is in setup mode, the setup page works while the phone is connected to Voltvik’s own WiFi network. The network is called Voltvik- followed by four uppercase characters, for example Voltvik-BE84. It is open and should never ask for a password. The suffix separates multiple devices from each other and is fixed. The name of your device is shown on the third settings page, NETWORK, on the screen, as “Connect to Voltvik-BE84”. When the device is already connected to your own WiFi, you instead open the device’s own IP address, shown on the same page.

  1. Check that WiFi is turned on in the Voltvik settings, and that the phone is actually on the network beginning with Voltvik-.
  2. Accept the “No internet connection” warning and choose to stay connected.
  3. Turn off mobile data temporarily if the phone jumps back to the regular network.
  4. In setup mode, type 192.168.4.1 manually in the browser address bar.
  5. Try another browser if the page still does not open.
  6. Forget the network beginning with Voltvik- on the phone, connect again and try once more.

If you do not see a network beginning with Voltvik- in the phone’s network list at all, go on to “I cannot find the Voltvik network at all” further down.

I typed the wrong WiFi password

You cannot lock yourself out. Voltvik never gives up its setup network without having something to fall back on. If it cannot contact the home network, Voltvik-XXXX comes back by itself. You need neither cable, PC nor to reset anything.

How long you have to wait depends on what happened:

  • If the device has never had a network before, the setup network is there right away.
  • If you have driven somewhere where the saved network does not exist, the network beginning with Voltvik- reappears after about 20 seconds.
  • If you typed the wrong password under “Connect to new WiFi”, it can take up to a minute before it gives up and lets you back in.

Connect the phone to Voltvik-XXXX again, open 192.168.4.1 and enter the password again.

The device also cleans up after itself at every startup. If a half-finished attempt remains in memory, it is deleted before the radio starts, so the setup network comes up cleanly. If something still seems stuck, there is a last resort described below.

I cannot find the Voltvik network at all

If, against expectation, the setup network does not appear, Voltvik has a built-in rescue you can trigger from the screen. It requires no cable, PC or app, and it does not touch your Victron setup: encryption keys, addresses and names remain.

  1. Turn the power off and on again.
  2. Press the screen five times within twenty seconds after startup.
  3. The screen flashes three times as confirmation that the rescue has been triggered.
  4. The device forgets the WiFi setup and restarts the Voltvik-XXXX setup network.
  5. Connect the phone to the network beginning with Voltvik- and open 192.168.4.1.

If the flashes come, the device has heard you. If they do not, you did not manage all five presses within twenty seconds, and you can just power off and on and try again.

Remember that Voltvik transmits on 2.4 GHz. Some phones hide such networks when they are in a mode that favours 5 GHz, so check that the phone shows all networks before you conclude.

“Waiting for data …”

This is normal during the first few seconds after startup. Voltvik has been given an address to listen for, but the radio has not yet had time to hear the device. The message changes to something more precise after about fifteen seconds — we deliberately say nothing definite until the radio has had a fair chance.

  1. Wait half a minute.
  2. If it still says the same, it is a real fault. The message has then changed to one of the two below.
“Wrong key?”

Voltvik hears the device — it is powered on and within range — but cannot unlock the messages. The signal strength is shown beside it as proof that the radio part is fine, so you do not need to move anything. Almost always, the encryption key is wrong, or Instant readout is not turned on.

  1. Open VictronConnect near the relevant device.
  2. Go to Product info → Instant readout → Show, and check that Instant readout is turned on.
  3. Copy the whole key again, with no missing characters or extra spaces.
  4. Paste it into the setup page for the same slot and save.
  5. Use one key per device. A SmartShunt key will not work for an MPPT, charger or other shunt.
  6. Remember that this is not the Bluetooth PIN code printed on the Victron device.
“Out of range”

Voltvik does not hear a single beep from the address that has been entered. Changing the key will not help then — either the device is turned off, too far away, or the address has been mistyped.

  1. Check that the device, battery or sensor has power and that Bluetooth is active.
  2. Check the MAC address character by character against the setup page.
  3. Move Voltvik closer to rule out range. Metal walls and battery boxes attenuate the signal strongly.
  4. Open VictronConnect and check that Instant readout is enabled on the device.
“Victron app connected?”

The device delivered data earlier, but has been silent for more than five minutes. By far the most common cause is that VictronConnect is open on a nearby phone: Victron stops broadcasting while an app holds an active connection. If it has been silent for less than five minutes, Voltvik instead writes last seen N min ago.

  1. Close VictronConnect completely on all nearby phones — locking the screen is not enough.
  2. The value normally returns within a minute.
  3. If that does not happen, check power and range as described above.
Demo values are shown

If you see example values or pages for equipment you do not have, Demo mode is on.

  1. Keep your finger on the screen until the settings open.
  2. Swipe to page 2 VIEW and press Demo mode so it turns off.
  3. Swipe down or press Back to exit. Automatic page switching now skips pages you do not have equipment for. If you swipe yourself, you still reach all pages — they just have no numbers.
The screen shows the wrong language

The language is selected from the setup page on the device. The setup page follows the same choice as the screen, so both change language together. New devices are set to English from the factory.

  1. Open the setup page from Voltvik-XXXX or the device’s IP address. The page opens in the language the device is set to.
  2. Choose Language and set Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. The setup page changes language as soon as you choose, before you have time to save.
  3. Press Save language. The screen follows immediately — the device does not need a restart.
Black screen

The screen may be asleep or without power. Voltvik has no on/off button — it starts by itself as soon as it gets voltage.

  1. Touch the glass once and release. If the screen was only asleep, it wakes up.
  2. Check power supply, cable and fuse.
  3. Cut the power for a moment and connect it again. Voltvik always turns on the backlight at startup, no matter how low the brightness has been set. If the screen still stays black, it is about power — not a setting.
  4. Check the polarity before trying again: red is plus, black is minus.
  5. Try starting via USB-C to rule out a fault in the fixed cable or power outlet.
The alarm flashes

Alarms and warnings from Victron SmartShunt/BMV-712, SmartSolar MPPT and Orion XS have been verified on real equipment and are shown on the screen.

  1. Open VictronConnect and connect to the relevant device for details.
  2. Check for low or high voltage, high temperature, overload or other fault code.
  3. Correct the condition on the original equipment. The alarm disappears when the device reports that the problem is gone.
  4. Do not use Voltvik as the only safety or alarm system.
Maintenance

Firmware

Current version is 0.10.0. All files are at voltvik.io/firmware, which is this page. The device is updated wirelessly from its own setup page, without cable, PC or app. Your settings survive: WiFi networks, Victron keys, tank setup and alarm limits remain.

How to update

You only need the file and a phone. The whole update takes about one minute.

  1. Download the file

Download firmware 0.10.0 to your phone or PC. The filename ends in .ota.bin.

  2. Open the setup page

If Voltvik is on your home network, use the IP address shown on the third settings page, NETWORK. Otherwise connect the phone to the open Voltvik-XXXX network and go to 192.168.4.1.

  3. Choose “Software”

The item is in the menu. At the top you see which version the device is running now.

  4. Choose file and install

Point to the .bin file and press Install update. A progress bar shows how far it has got.

  5. Wait for the restart

The device restarts itself. Open “Software” again and check that the version number has changed. That is the only confirmation that counts.

Do not disconnect the power during an update. An interrupted update may require the device to be flashed again over USB.

If something looks strange

The device restarts at almost the same moment as it answers the browser. That is why the page may report a lost connection even though the update went through perfectly. Wait half a minute, open the page again and check the version number before you conclude.

If the old number is still there, the update did not take. Try again, preferably near the device, so the signal is strong all the way. The browser refuses to send files that do not belong here, so you cannot break anything by trying again.

Download

Download the file here

This page is the fixed place for firmware. The address voltvik.io/firmware points here and does not change. You need no account and no login.

Download voltvik-blikk-0.10.0.ota.bin

The file is about 1.8 MB and ends in .ota.bin. It is the only type the device accepts wirelessly. If you get hold of a file called factory.bin, it belongs in USB flashing with us and is rejected by the setup page.

The device does not notify you about new versions. It keeps running what it has until you fetch a new file here.

Earlier versions

Old versions remain available, so you can go back if a new version causes trouble. Change the version number in the address:

voltvik.io/nedlasting/voltvik-blikk-0.9.0.ota.bin

Going backwards works the same way as going forwards. The settings remain.

Changelog

Development so far

0.10 beta

Inverters and combination units got their own page. Phoenix, Inverter RS, Multi RS, MultiPlus-II and Quattro now show load, battery voltage and battery current, and the status line says Shore power when the combination unit is charging from the grid. The ring on this page is deliberately the opposite of the others: green at low load, red near rated power, because a full ring here means you are approaching the limit. Blue Smart charger is shown on the DC charger page, BatteryProtect reports why it disconnected, and Smart Battery Sense no longer takes the battery role from a real SmartShunt. Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and English are selected from the setup page, and both the screen and setup page follow the choice without restart; new devices are set to English from the factory. The gas page can show kilos instead of percent. The interface now has eight measurement pages.

0.9 beta

Each device now creates its own network name, Voltvik-XXXX, so two devices near each other can no longer be confused. Diagnostics in plain text: the setup page distinguishes between a device it cannot hear and one it cannot unlock, and shows signal strength as proof. Mopeka Pro Check H2O and Victron SmartShunt/BMV-712, SmartSolar MPPT and Orion XS have been verified on real hardware. The gas setup uses bottle size and empty/full readings, and the interface has eight measurement pages: BATTERY, CHARGE LEVEL, DC CHARGER, INVERTER, SOLAR, GAS, WATER and TEMPERATURE.

0.8 beta

The hardware platform was run on a real device with screen, touch, Bluetooth and WiFi. Six pages: BATTERY, CHARGE LEVEL, DC CHARGER, SOLAR, GAS and TEMPERATURE.

0.7 beta

First working firmware on the Guition board, with wireless update and setup over the device’s own WiFi hotspot.

Extended support

BLE recording

Does Voltvik not support your equipment yet? Then we can map what the device broadcasts over Bluetooth Low Energy, and use it to add support.

Today this is a technical process that requires a PC and USB cable. Recording directly from the setup page, with a downloadable CSV, is planned — but not ready yet.
  1. Contact us first

Send an email to support@voltvik.io with brand, model and which values you expect to see. We reply with a separate diagnostic firmware, Voltvik Sniff.

  2. Close apps

Close all phone apps connected to the battery, sensor or device you want to investigate. One app can block broadcasting.

  3. Connect to PC

Flash the diagnostic version and leave the device connected to the PC with USB while it is close to the equipment.

  4. Log for 5 minutes

The log shows every single BLE advertisement nearby, with address, manufacturer and raw data.

  5. Send in the log

Send the log file back to support@voltvik.io. Afterwards you flash regular Voltvik firmware again.

Privacy

Review the file before sending

The recording captures all nearby BLE broadcasting — including watches, phones, TVs and other sensors. Much of it is encrypted or only useful to the original device, but it will still be in the file.

Do not send recordings you are not comfortable sharing. Feel free to include the battery app’s encryption codes if they are needed to interpret your particular battery.
